DSP & Audio Engineering Consulting

Solving the hardest audio and speech engineering problems.

I help product teams design, analyze, and ship signal processing systems — from algorithm conception through embedded implementation.

The situations that lead teams to call me

🎧

It sounds great in the lab — but not in the field

Your noise reduction or audio processing performs well in controlled conditions but degrades badly in real-world deployment. You need an expert who can diagnose why and fix it.

⚙️

The algorithm works — but won't fit

You have a signal processing design that performs well in simulation but needs to run on a resource-constrained embedded target. Fast, efficient implementation is a different art.

🗺️

The design is there — but progress has slowed to a crawl

Complexity in a speech or audio pipeline rarely announces itself. It accumulates in the gaps between teams, between vendors, between what was specified and what was built. The right outside perspective can cut through it quickly.

What clients say

"We were fortunate to connect after struggling for months with another SW company. Steve was able to understand our objectives right away and implement a solution in Audio Weaver within the agreed time and budget. He is our first call going forward."

David Warner CTO, Exemplar Audio

"Steve was critical to my project, providing deep experience in a specialized signal processing field. He was adaptable to evolving needs and created and delivered effective software. A pleasure to work with!"

Andy Draudt Principal Investigator, Triton Systems Inc.

Problems solved

Acoustics / Hardware

Noise Reduction with a Nonstandard Actuator

Challenge

Design methods proposed by previous consultants relied on engineering intuition that the client's internal team did not possess — creating a dependency that slowed progress and raised cost.

Outcome

A suite of automatic design tools was created, allowing the customer's engineers to iterate designs independently — speeding progress and reducing ongoing consulting cost.

Voice / Aviation

Gate Agent Announcement Transcription — Airline App

Challenge

A highly complex system-level design involving many stakeholders: gate agent PA systems, audio transport to server, third-party STT and LLM integration, and end-user app delivery. No one had defined where voice processing ended and other concerns began.

Outcome

A clearly scoped set of voice processing concerns was defined, with clean interfaces to the app and PA surfaces. The overall system design moved forward with significantly lower risk. The pilot was completed successfully.

How I work with clients

01

Diagnostic Engagement

A focused first phase to map the problem, identify the critical unknowns, and give you a clear picture of what's actually blocking you — before committing to anything larger.

02

Architecture & Review

An independent review of a proposed design before you build it — pressure-testing assumptions and surfacing risks while there's still time to change course.

03

Embedded Project Work

Sustained work alongside your team as an integrated technical lead — algorithm design, implementation guidance, and mentoring. Remote-first with on-site when it matters.

Not sure which fits? A 30-minute conversation costs nothing.

The principal

Audyl LLC is led by Steve Isabelle, an independent DSP consultant with a PhD in signal processing and a career spent turning hard acoustic and speech problems into shipped products.

Steve's foundation is in the rigorous theory of signal processing, applied to real products at Bell Labs, Bose, Nvidia, and DSP Concepts. He has led engineering teams at the first, second, and third level — so he understands both the technical and organizational dimensions of hard problems, and knows how to leave teams stronger than he found them.

The specialty is the work that's too theoretical for a firmware team and too practical for a research lab — algorithm and architecture design, custom design tooling, and guiding implementation teams through the details that matter.
